Happy Juneteenth. — Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. If you decide to protest, wear face masks and eye protection (even glasses or sunglasses), wash your hands, and keep 6 ft apart as best you can. But also be aware of the harsh reality: large protests along with tear gas, and mass arrests will likely lead to more COVID-19 cases and thus more deaths. What also leads to deaths is institutional racism and white supremacy. It affects people of color at a cellular level and has been here before COVID-19. There are other ways to show support other than in-person protests: donating, posting online, and more. Studying Taiwanese and Mandarin has been a great way for me to connect with family, my cultural roots, and to have fun =). If you’d like to share some of your own Taiwanese phrases, feel free to comment or message me. Day 1: 莫按呢 mài an-né: Don’t be like that. Day 2: 食飽未 tsia̍h-pá buē: Did you eat yet? Day 3: 屎緊褲帶打死結 sài kìn khò toâ phàh sī kat: lit. - When you need to take a dump, your belt buckle gets stuck. Meaning - When you’re about to do something important, you get blindsided. Day 4: 六月芥菜假有心 la̍k-gue̍h kuà-tshài ké ū sim: lit. - June black mustard seed fakes being ripe. Meaning - black mustard seed is not ripe in June, so to call someone a June black mustard seed, is to call someone a fake. Day 5: 我共你講 guá kā lí kóng: Let me tell you. Day 6: 便所底彈吉他 - piãn só tué tôa gì tah: lit. - to play guitar in the bathroom. Meaning - to put on airs, to make stuff up. Comes from 臭彈 (tshàu tôa), literally “smelly playing”, which is “to bullshit.” Day 7: 黑瓶子裝醬油 oo-kan-á té tāu-iû: lit. put soy sauce in a black jar. Meaning - hide one’s lamp under a bushel, i.e. to have ability and talent but not to show it off. Day 8: 法蘭西水，食一點氣 huat-lân-se-tsuí, tsia̍h tsi̍t-tiám khuì: lit. French soda, eat some anger. Meaning: I did nothing wrong, I shouldn’t have to apologize. It’s said that during the unsuccessful French invasion of Taiwan (1885), that they introduced soda to the Taiwanese for the first time. Day 9: 便所佇佗位 piān-sóo tī tó-uī: Where is the bathroom? Day 10: 你足媠 lí tsiok suí: You’re beautiful 我愛你guá ài-li: I love you.
